Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo

After several farewell meals and some fond licks from Jetta, Duke and Rexy it was time to leave Brunei. The new moon had been sighted and so Ramadam had started - in most countries this is dictated by a date, but here it also depends on the sighting of the moon, so this year it was delayed by 24 hours. Restaurants in the city would be closed during the day for the whole of the festival and numerous tents had been set up in the streets so that meals would be very sociable events once darkness had fallen.
The flight takes so little time that they serve your drink before you even leave the ground: 20-30 minutes at low altitude means that I had great views all the way.
Kota Kinabalu sounded like a quaint little place but is in fact a thriving town and fishing port. The sky and sea are blue and the islands which are offshore are covered in dense dark jungle which gives a stunning contrast. Walking along the promenade on my first day was very pleasant and even more so because I was able to sit and watch the world go by .... whilst enjoying my first glass of chilled white wine for 6 weeks!

In the Japanese restaurant I discovered that I love
soya beans straight from the pod!
